Programme Overview
Training Description
Session Objectives
- Explain the drought phenomenon, its types, and its complex effects on livelihoods. Differentiate between reactive disaster response and proactive drought risk management. Outline the core components of an effective drought early warning system. Assess community vulnerability and drought risk using relevant indicators and data. Develop effective mitigation, preparedness, and response strategies and plans. Demonstrate how to select and interpret appropriate drought monitoring indices for a specific region. Apply integrated drought management within national and international policy frameworks.
About the Course
Strategic Drought Risk Monitoring & Response is a specialized training course designed to equip disaster risk professionals, environmental managers, policymakers, agricultural specialists, water resource managers, and emergency planners with the knowledge and practical skills required to monitor drought conditions, assess emerging risks, strengthen early warning, and coordinate effective drought preparedness and response strategies. The course also focuses on drought contingency planning, water resource management, food and livelihood security, agricultural resilience, community preparedness, resource prioritization, humanitarian response, risk communication, and long-term drought resilience.Through case studies, monitoring exercises, scenario simulations, and response planning activities, participants will develop the ability to detect drought risks early, translate monitoring information into actionable intelligence, coordinate timely interventions, and develop strategic drought response and resilience plans.
